Speaking from the heart on a special day

IDAHOBIT - the International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia – puts the spotlight on the challenges that many people in the LGBTQ+ community continue to face, such as living their lives with stigma and discrimination and often feeling unsafe because of who they are and who they choose to love. It reminds us that - whatever our sexual orientation, gender identity, race, religion, disability, or any other characteristic - we all have the right to live and work in safety.

IDAHOBIT was started in 2004 and marks the day, 17 May 1990, when the World Health Organization declassified homosexuality as a mental disorder. The theme for this year’s IDAHOBIT is Together always: united in diversity, highlighting the need for us all to look out for each other, creating an environment where we can be our true selves and be free from violence or harassment.

To mark the occasion Anglo American hosted a special live event in The Glasshouse at their London HQ on May 17th 2023 with guest speaker Col Dame Kelly Holmes (MBE mil), who shared her experience as a minority ethnic, LGBT+ woman, recounting how she overcame barriers on her way to winning double Olympic Gold for Britain in the 2004 Athens Olympics.

A selection of shots from the event can be found below.
